About

summary · current focus

I'm the Head of Data at WalaPlus, where I own the enterprise data platform end to end on Google Cloud: the BigQuery warehouse, the production databases behind it, the BI portal on top of it, and the delivery pipeline that ships all three. I stepped into the role in July 2026 after leading the company-wide migration of the warehouse onto GCP.

I have 8+ years of technical experience. It began inside a civil-engineering career, where automating project controls and reporting turned into a move to data full time, so I tend to arrive at data problems from both the systems side and the delivery side.

Equally at home tuning a production database, cutting cloud spend structurally, putting validated machine learning in front of the teams that act on it, and reporting the results to the CTO.

Current focus

  • Owning a multi-engine production estate: BigQuery, Cloud SQL (PostgreSQL/MySQL), Redis, MongoDB Atlas, and the cost, performance and governance that come with it
  • Structural cost engineering: partitioning and clustering at load time rather than tuning query by query
  • Platform DevOps: GitHub Actions gates, Cloud Build deploys over IAP, security alert remediation
  • Putting machine learning in front of the people who act on it, and validating it against what actually happened

With a confidence gate at 0.95 it answers 90% of glyphs on its own at 99.5% accuracy and leaves the rest to a person. Three SPARQL extractions, a build step that turns astronomical years into BC/AD labels with their precision, one row per entity, a hand-curated conventional chronology (Shaw 2000) joined where Wikidata is silent, pandera validation on every table, and a quality log of every date the pipeline refused. 513 pharaohs, 38 dynasties, 84 pyramids, each row traceable to its query. One hundred years of annual flow. Three change-point methods, binary segmentation, PELT and a two-mean scan with a 2,000-draw bootstrap, agree on a break at 1898–1900 (95% CI 1896–1902); the mean flow falls by a little over a fifth and never recovers in the record. Then an honest forecasting test: knowing the break fixes a bias worth three RMSE points against a year-to-year noise of about 120. The gain is real and small, and the notebook says so.

Head of Data

WalaPlus

End-to-end ownership of data, databases and BI on GCP, and of the application teams' backend and cloud decisions (VP of Data / Chief Data Officer scope).

  • Own the enterprise data platform on Google Cloud: the BigQuery warehouse, Cloud SQL (PostgreSQL/MySQL), Redis and MongoDB Atlas, and the BI portal on top of them that serves teams across the business. Lead the data engineering and analytics team, own backend, database and GCP decisions for the application teams, and report monthly to the CTO.
  • Led the company-wide migration of the warehouse from a legacy cloud vendor onto BigQuery to completion: dashboards and services re-pointed, warehouse-only views rebuilt, historical data archived and re-verified, dead call sites removed, and the vendor retired with no reporting outage.
  • Run platform DevOps: source control on GitHub, deploys through Cloud Build over an IAP tunnel in minutes, PR gates for type checks, linting, end-to-end tests and static analysis, and a security-alert backlog kept clean.
  • Extended ownership to every production database: audited each estate into owned remediation epics, verified every proposed index drop against live usage counters before allowing it, and partitioned and clustered the hot BigQuery tables at load time so cost is controlled structurally rather than query by query.
  • Put a churn model, validated out of sample, in front of Customer Success as a live at-risk list, and run an AI-assisted engineering practice with written guardrails and review gates.

Staff Data Engineer

WalaPlus

Built the BI portal, the finance data model and the migration programme that moved the company onto GCP.

  • Built the BI portal from the ground up: FastAPI/Python services, React and TypeScript frontend, Redis caching with nightly preload, Google OAuth with group-based authorization enforced server side, Excel/PDF export on every dashboard. It replaced the previous ad-hoc reporting tools.
  • Replaced a sprawl of fragmented bronze views with a normalized star schema refreshed nightly as the single source of truth for finance and FinTech reporting, with three-way reconciliation between the ledger, the accounting system and Finance's own records.
  • Established reporting assurance: every published metric re-derived independently at source before release, which caught material miscalculations before any report reached a client.
  • Owned the data side of two platform migrations from legacy MySQL to PostgreSQL on Cloud SQL: drift checkers, parity audits, per-client rolling cutovers, and production cutovers completed with zero errors and every balance reconciled.
  • Designed the warehouse-to-GCP path: a resumable bulk-mirror engine with atomic per-table swaps, then direct nightly BigQuery loads with parity checks, legacy fallbacks and a live cutover registry; ran the CTO database workshops that approved the plan and the data-asset naming standard.

AI Researcher (part-time)

Momita.ai (formerly Gravilog)

Part-time second role: AI Team Lead on the maternal-care nutrition chatbot (Jul 2025 – Mar 2026), then research and model improvement.

  • Led the maternal-care nutrition chatbot on GCP Vertex AI; implemented RAG and fine-tuning with safety guardrails, traceability and responsible recommendations.
  • Built a Firebase-hosted web portal around it, with authentication, session telemetry and release workflows; logged interactions to Firestore, BigQuery and Cloud SQL for auditing and analytics; integrated global food-statistics APIs for calorie and vitamin calculations; ran evaluation and feedback loops on recommendation quality.
  • Since April 2026: rebuilt the agent so Arabic is a first-class language rather than a translation layer, added a second LLM beside Gemini with per-model ratings and a bilingual speed, token and cost comparison, and cut typical answer time by a third and model cost by half.

The tweet that made a meme

In August 2017 a tweet of mine turned a stock photo into the "Distracted Boyfriend" meme. Vox and HuffPost credited it as the version that made the meme go viral: more than 35,000 retweets and nearly 100,000 likes in its first week, and one of the defining memes of the 2010s from there.

99,379likes by 25 Aug 2017

Wikipedia's entry on the meme describes the tweet and cites the Vox piece; Dazed embedded it in an interview with the photographer; in 2020 a Columbia University lecturer asked permission to use it in an academic article on memes in the language classroom. The full story, in fairness: another user had posted the same three labels a few hours earlier that day. Mine is the one that spread. Wikipedia · Dazed

Why that "distracted boyfriend" stock photo meme is suddenly everywhere

"…a tweet by Twitter user @n1m161 making a joke about millennials' growing affinity for socialism was copied by Twitter user Omar Essam, and Essam's version hit the big time. Essam's tweet has been retweeted more than 35,000 times and favorited nearly 100,000 times."

The Story Behind The Stock Photo That Launched A Thousand Jokes

"Another Twitter user named Omar Essam copied the idea, according to Vox. Essam's version went viral. Things just took off from there."
